Space-saving, economical, aesthetically pleasing, robust and just what you need to gain access to that roof garden/loft/mezzanine – a spiral stair is a solution to many an access problem. However, they are technically complicated to design, particularly within UK building regulations. A bespoke service can take all the hassle away for you, by designing, manufacturing and installing a feature staircase, but you will have to pay for all this work to be done for you – often much more than the budget for a small renovation allows.

That’s why QStairs have developed a quality kit stair that any competent self-builder or hired professional can install at a fraction of the cost but without sacrificing durability or quality. You see, not all stair kits are created equal and there are lots of considerations to compare, from material type and thickness, to fixings and finishes – you get what you pay for when it comes to quality. All QStairs kits are designed and manufactured to British Standards, with plenty of detailed information on the website to help you understand what is required.

It is important to consider how the stair will be used and by who in order to choose the correct size. There are two to choose from, Category A or Category B, denoting a differing criteria of stairs for compliance between occasional domestic and commercial use.

The height of the stair is determined by the distance between the two finished floor surfaces you are accessing. QStairs have developed kit ranges between 0.6m and 4m that still allow for compliant headroom on every step – excluding 1.9m – 2.3m for that very reason. Any taller than 4m and you would require additional support and strength in the structure to maintain integrity so QStairs believe you are best employing a bespoke manufacturer in such circumstance. The beauty of this range is the flexibility – although accurate measurement is ideally required, you are not left stranded with unusable parts if you get it a little wrong – there is flexibility in each kit up to 10mm shorter or taller.

Once you’ve got the basics decided, the fun part comes in choosing how it will look. The landing options are for a square platform at the top, depending on the space you have available (or the look you want). All of the mild steel components are hot dip galvanised in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461:2022 and under the control of ISO 9001 which means they are longer lasting than electroplated imports. If you want even more durability, say for salty sea air locations, there is the option of powder coating in one of four colour options, RAL 7015 Slate Grey, RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, RAL 9005 Jet Black or RAL 9010 Pure White, all with a striking black handrail.

There is lots of information on the QStairs website about what to choose and how to install it, with technical downloads and FAQS to answer every question before you buy, plus a gallery of inspiration from previous customers.
